Olwethu-Thando Klaas is in the business of online content curation. When defined and described, her highly successful blog called Klaas in Session can be summed up as an online diary, subjective to the whims of Olwethu. It provides her with a creative outlet, while letting her contribute authentic content and opinions to the highly competitive arena of blogging, as well as aid in fundamentally transforming the current global vision of South Africa to a more contemporary image of the African motif. Keep reading to see how she’s put a spin on the digital nomad lifestyle.
My name is Olwethu-Thando Klaas and I’m a Digital Nomad.
What does that mean exactly? It means I work hard and play hard on my time, wherever my work takes me (as long as there’s a decent Wi-Fi connection of course)
My personal blog, Klaas in Session, allowed me to create my dream job. I’m in the business of digital content curation but I also hustle as a lecturer, copywriter and research consultant.
How did I get here? After my studies, the realities of the job market kicked in. I knew that conventional office life wasn’t for me and so a combination of frustration, procrastination and privilege, allowed me to seize, negotiate and craft a unique career path that gave me the freedom to work on my terms.
There’s no recipe to becoming a successful blogger or brand ambassador but if you’re willing to work hard and stay true to yourself you can create your dream job too.
Wanting to pursue the digital nomad life? Here are my top tips:
- Don’t stop the hustle. Work isn’t 9 – 5 when you work for yourself.
- Stay up to date. Keep on top of social media and digital trends.
- Go FREE. Take advantage of free, easy-to-use platforms like WordPress to get started.
- Be you. There is no one like you, so make sure you always stay true to yourself, it’s the most powerful thing you have when building a personal brand.
- Invest in good tech. Build your mobile office, and you can work anywhere anytime.
Gearing up with the right gadgets allows you to earn money in so many different ways. From creating digital content to writing restaurant reviews and live streaming the red carpet, my digital set up has taken me around the world and allowed me to turn glamorous locations like the Radisson Red into my office!
Here are my top 5 tech picks to start your digital nomad journey:
A flexible working environment needs a great laptop. Mine has come with me to New York, my favourite coffee shops and even late night work sessions in my bed. The Acer Spin 1 Laptop looks set to be my new tech favourite. It easily converts from a standard laptop to a tablet as well as ‘tent’ mode for my Netflix viewing pleasure. It’s slim and sexy enough to whip out in a meeting, and fast thanks to a kick-ass processor.

Losing your work could mean losing a client, so protecting your work in progress is essential when self-employed. The WB Elements 2TB hard drive is a great way to back up your copy, photos and more. I usually have more than one so that I can keep my photos and memories safe at home, while I use my second to store my current work and entertainment when travelling and working on the go.
Count yourself lucky if you’ve never had to run around your hotel room or the airport, looking for a plug point that can charge 4+ devices at the same time. With the Snug 4 Port USB home charger, you can have all your devices on 100% when you need them.
When you spend most of the workday listening to music in cafe’s, editing videos or travelling with your playlist on shuffle, comfortable and stylish high quality in-ear earphones are a necessity.
Staying charged is vital. No savvy Digital Nomad should be on-the-move without a dependable charging source. Investing in the Power Cube Power Bank is just good business!

When it comes to your career, there’s no rule book anymore. You can pay your bills without waking up to an office job or you can maintain the job you have, and live your best life by hustling after hours.
